It is often argued that governments should open free public libraries nationwide, while others contend that these are unnecessary given the widespread availability of information online. While public libraries are somewhat valuable in certain communities, I still believe that they are largely redundant in today’s digital age.
On the one hand, public libraries offer far greater benefits than just access to information. Firstly, they provide a communal space where people, regardless of background or socio-economic status, can study, read, and engage in different activities. For children and young students in particular, libraries serve as a safe and encouraging environment to learn and socialize. Moreover, in far-flung regions where reliable internet access is not guaranteed, public libraries remain essential in bridging the knowledge gap and promoting equal opportunities for education.
However, I contend that public libraries are an outdated and ineffective use of public funds. This is because most information, including books, academic papers, and other resources, can now be accessed instantly via the internet, making physical libraries seem irrelevant for the masses. As such, governments may be better off investing in digital infrastructure, such as providing free or subsidised internet access, which would benefit a greater number of people more efficiently. Based on this, online resources are not only more cost-effective but also more versatile, providing valuable knowledge that benefits the majority of people.
In conclusion, while the public libraries still play an important role in fostering community spirit and ensuring equal access to education, in my opinion, governments should instead prioritize modern technological advancements to provide more efficient and wide-reaching access to information.
