● What do you usually do in the evening?
After a rough day, I usually like to relax by playing with my little daughter. It’s a great way to unwind and spend quality time with her.
● Do you spend your evenings in the same way on weekdays and at weekends?
Not at all. On weekends, we often travel to nearby destinations, typically between 10 to 30 km from Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a nice change of pace and allows us to explore different places.
● Is there anything you don’t like to do in the evenings?
I guess it would be receiving a call from my boss. It’s quite annoying to have to deal with work problems after working hours when I’m trying to relax.
● Do you prefer to spend your evenings with family or friends?
It really depends. On special occasions like Tet holidays, I love to be with my relatives as I might see someone I haven’t seen for ages. But on normal days, casual outings with friends can be more enjoyable.

Describe a memorable event that you participated in

Answer:
A really special event that I want to tell you about is a full-moon party at my high school. To give you some background, the full-moon festival is the second largest festival in our culture, only after the Lunar New Year. We celebrate it once a year to mark the end of the harvest season.
Before the party at our school, we decorated the common room with hundreds of lanterns. They shimmered like stars on the ceiling, leaving everyone in awe the moment they entered the room. To be honest, I wasn’t a teachers’ pet at the time, so I was surprised when they chose me to be part of the decoration team. But I did my best and was satisfied with the result.
In the room, we were served lots of moon cakes and seasonal fruits. My friends and I devoured them until we all felt bloated. I’m not saying the servings were perfect though. If we had had more money, we could have ordered more cupcakes and pizzas.
But the fun didn’t end there because we enjoyed a number of traditional Vietnamese games. I loved lobbing water balls at my friends and aiming my water gun at my teachers. All in all, it was a wonderful night, and I guess I will never forget it.

● How important are traditional celebrations in your culture?
Traditional celebrations are hugely important in our culture. They preserve our heritage at both familial and societal levels. For families, these celebrations provide an opportunity to come together, strengthen bonds, and pass down customs and traditions to younger generations. As a society, these events foster a sense of community and shared identity, reinforcing cultural values and creating a cohesive social fabric.
● What are the differences between how children and adults celebrate festivals in your country?
There is definitely a distinctiveness in the way children and adults enjoy festivals. Children mostly enjoy them because they get some evenings or days off from their studies, allowing them to play games, enjoy special foods, and sometimes receive gifts or lucky money. Adults, however, might be busier during festivals as they often have to prepare food, organize events, and take care of family responsibilities. They also focus more on the cultural and traditional aspects, ensuring that customs are followed and that the celebrations are meaningful.
● Do you think the way people celebrate festivals has changed over time?
For sure. I must say it has become more materialistic. People now treat festivals as major shopping seasons, spending much more money on gifts, decorations, and entertainment. By contrast, they care less about family reunions and the traditional values of the celebrations. This shift negatively affects the sense of belonging and the true spirit of the festivals, as the focus moves away from meaningful connections and cultural heritage to consumerism.
● Are there any festivals or celebrations that you think are becoming less popular?
Yes, there are some festivals that are becoming less popular, especially those that are not heavily commercialized. For instance, smaller, regional festivals that were once significant to local communities are now overshadowed by larger, more widely promoted events. Additionally, with the influence of globalization, some traditional celebrations are being replaced by Western holidays, leading to a decline in their observance and cultural relevance.
